Usually if I'm blocked, it's because I'm trying to resolve a plot problem. I either work on a different part of the story or I take a break and let the problem churn in the back of my mind. Or, third option, I grab a notebook and pen and start brainstorming possible solutions. It's happened often enough that I trust the problem will eventually work itself out. I may have to write that section many times before I'm satisfied, but the answer eventually shows up (at least it has so far!).

You get to spend a lot of time with your imaginary friends in their imaginary worlds. You create people that become your companions and friends, and you go on journeys with them. Sometimes you drive, and sometimes they tell you where you have to take them. It's a fascinating process.

Read, read, read--in and outside the genre you want to write. And write and rewrite. Practice your craft. Get feedback from others. Don't be afraid of criticism--it helps you improve as a writer. Mostly, write what you love. More important than "being a writer" is loving the writing, because writing is work. It's wonderful, but it's hard. So, write what you love. What are the stories that beg you to write them? What are the stories that only you can write?

I'm working on the second volume of my Light-Bringer Series, A Gift of Shadows. I'm planning on releasing that book in late 2014. So, as that one gets finalized, I'm also thinking about the third volume.

I can be inspired by an evocative image or setting, but in order to really start writing I need at least one character to take shape. I love books with well-developed characters, so character is central to my own writing process.

I've long been fascinated by angels and other winged beings, and I love urban fantasy (and other kinds of fantasy). I wanted to write a book about angels that drew on the Judeo-Christian tradition and its Ancient Near Eastern influences. Zeke, the ancient mentor character, came to me first, and then gradually the story and other characters appeared.
