I either work on a different part of the story or I take a break and let the problem churn in the back of my mind. Or, third option, I grab a notebook and pen and start brainstorming possible solutions. It's happened often enough that I trust the problem will eventually work itself out. I may have to write that section many times before I'm satisfied, but the answer eventually shows up (at least it has so far!).(less)

You create people that become your companions and friends, and you go on journeys with them. Sometimes you drive, and sometimes they tell you where you have to take them. “...he'd made friends with the oblivion found in dreamless sleep."

“Even apocalypse looks less dire when viewed over a plate of bacon.”

“Do not fear emptiness. It is the dwelling place of possibility. Nothing can be added to a vessel that is already full.
~Malachi”
Stephanie Stamm, A Gift of Wings

“Life is a journey, not a destination.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Stephanie Stamm, A Gift of Wings

“Well—I have to say I personally have never drawn such a sharp line between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ as you. For me: that line is often false. The two are never disconnected. One can’t exist without the other. As long as I am acting out of love, I feel I am doing best I know how. But you—wrapped up in judgment, always regretting the past, cursing yourself, blaming yourself, asking ‘what if,’ ‘what if.’ ‘Life is cruel.’ ‘I wish I had died instead of.’ Well—think about this. What if all your actions and choices, good or bad, make no difference to God? What if the pattern is pre-set? No no—hang on—this is a question worth struggling with. What if our badness and mistakes are the very thing that set our fate and bring us round to good? What if, for some of us, we can’t get there any other way?”
Donna Tartt, The Goldfinch

“One always has a better book in one's mind than one can manage to get onto paper.”
Michael Cunningham
