Doug Limbrick This has never been a big problem for me. I sometime get to a point where I feel that a part of the story is not right. Usually this means for me that its a bit superficial or lacking credibility in my eyes. If I can I will leave that part and move on knowing that I need to go back to it. If that is not appropriate I will take a break from writing as I don't think its helpful to just sit and try for inspiration. I may go and do some more research or read my notes again or think about how a complete restructure might help. Sometimes its best to walk away and have a rest - listen to music or read what others have written.
Doug Limbrick Writing a book takes time so be patient and be prepared to do the ground work. Regardless of the topic and the the type of writing (fiction or nonfiction) its important to do the research, talk to people who know the subject or who may have some information, etc. The more you understand your subject the more confident you will feel when you start your writing. Thinking about your subject is important and exploring any emotional aspects of the story can be very rewarding in helping to fully develop the subject.
Doug Limbrick I have recently had two books published and am working on a book launch for one of them and marketing and promotion of both which takes time. I am not sure what I will move to next but I have several ideas which need to be explored further to determine if there is a book in any of them.
Doug Limbrick I have always enjoyed writing. I find writing, no matter what the subject is or how long or short the the story, to be satisfying. I also enjoy doing the research once I have an idea or subject in mind. this often leads to unexpected finds and new ideas.
Doug Limbrick My most recent book (Running the Marathon with Cancer) is a memoir about being a marathon runner and discovering that I had colorectal cancer. I decided to write about what happened to me including the mechanics of the treatment and about my feelings. After lots of thought I decided that I needed to answer three important questions in order to have a worthwhile story: why did I get cancer, why did I survive and what did I learn. Writing this type of book was a challenge for me as I generally write about nineteenth century Australian history.
Doug Limbrick A very deep sense of satisfaction in seeing your work in print.
