A graduate of the Australian National University, Canberra (geography, political history, economic history, economics). Worked for many years in the broad area of social policy (developing options, providing advice, monitoring and evaluation). Authored many papers and reports on social policy issues in areas such as poverty, disadvantage, housing and homelessness including developing international comparisons. Over the last 20 years have focussed particularly on nineteenth-century emigration to the Australian colonies, including exploring the reasons people emigrated with a focus on disadvantaged groups that emigrated. Usually this means for me that…moreThis has never been a big problem for me. I sometime get to a point where I feel that a part of the story is not right. Usually this means for me that its a bit superficial or lacking credibility in my eyes. If I can I will leave that part and move on knowing that I need to go back to it. If that is not appropriate I will take a break from writing as I don't think its helpful to just sit and try for inspiration. I may go and do some more research or read my notes again or think about how a complete restructure might help. Sometimes its best to walk away and have a rest - listen to music or read what others have written.(less)
