Melissa Embry So many to choose from, especially if we eliminate married couples, or even romantically involved couples: Robinson Crusoe and Friday, Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings, Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. I notice these are all men, but I like them because both parties have strengths. Wish I could remember a case when two female characters (romantically paired or not) had those kinds of partnerships. Still, for a heterosexual pair (maybe not romantically involved, although there are hints of that), my favorite is Perry Mason and Della Street. Della is always there, sometimes a step ahead of Perry. And each of them looks after the other.
Melissa Embry So far I haven't had any serious cases of writer's block. If I get stuck at a particular point, though, it's helpful to turn to a different project to clear my mind.
Melissa Embry I'm currently writing a thriller with the working title, The Ugly Man, about a soldier who learns he's not just ugly, but Neanderthal ugly. Can a 21st century human possibly be a member of a species that went extinct tens of thousands of years ago? He enlists the help of an anthropologist with some ancient hominin issues of her own to search for his roots. But will either of them survive the search? The germ of this book was my daughter's fascination with ancient human species. It grew into a short story, and from there to a novel in progress that recently won a "best manuscript" citation from the Writers League of Texas.
