I'm glad you're enjoying the book, Kate! Like a lot of my stories this one began as a single scene—I imagined a classroom full of girls, all dressed in grey with their heads covered. They all had their heads down, bored to death and miserable except one girl who was staring out of the window. My vision followed hers and I saw the swirls of sand and dust across a crystal dome, and beyond, a desert of chaotic rocks and a single beam of light. I knew that I wanted to write about that girl, get her out of her miserable existence, and find out what was beyond the crystal dome. The more I write about this world the more complex and layered it becomes, hence the short story spin offs. I wonder sometimes if I'll ever be finished with it :)

I was thinking of what was lacking in the opening of a section of a book I'm revising and decided it needed movement. Instead of a static scene, I had a child running. Once I'd got the scene sorted out, the kid kept on running until he'd opened a story all for himself.

Don't know really. The germ of an idea starts as a microscopic one liner, or an image, makes itself a nest in my head and just grows.

I'm working on several different projects. The third volume of The Green Woman series is almost ready, then there is a collection of stories connected to this final part of the story. The follow-on series has two volumes completed that need editing, an urban fantasy series for YA that is currently being considered by a couple of publishers, a historical fantasy is half-finished, a YA unclassifiable just started, a collection of retellings of Irish legends that I'd like to find the time to polish, and loads of poetry that I ought to start collecting together.

I've decided not to get it.
