Hi Alisa, I really enjoyed Smothermoss. Was ‘the rope’ around Sheila’s neck her anxiety and fear? Sorry for asking but I would love to hear what your thoughts were when you wrote this.

Alisa Alering Hi Susan, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm hesitant to definitively state that any image in a story directly represents one thing. I really value hearing readers' takes, sometimes you all see things that I don't! That said, I tend to think of the weight of Sheila's rope as everything that's holding her back: anxiety and fear, yes, also poverty, lack of satisfying role models, suppressed desire, family obligations, and so on.
