it's always either one of two things: boredom, or bitchiness. last year someone called me a black baboon on the internet. to claim the epithet for my own was a unique pleasure.

absolutely. i'm the kind of writer whose stories sort of percolate a long time in the back of my mind, with occasional imagery inconveniently punching through to my forebrain now and again. this means that i *feel* the story before i ever articulate it—leaving room for a lot of meaningful structural details that need to get filled-in later, when i'm in drafting-mode. the best, though, is when i am telling the story in synopsis to someone else, and i realize i'd been aiming at a thing i hadn't even thought of consciously, and it all fits a certain way that feels true and satisfying. that's happened twice; i've kept the transcripts for reference.

read. then read some more. also, watch movies, and see plays, and listen to stories old people tell, and watch lots of documentaries and comedy specials. storytelling is a thing we do—humans, i mean—and it's in our DNA. we are a storytelling species. exposing yourself to all the different forms of that art will always, always help you learn how to tell better stories.
