Allison Epstein There wasn't, actually! Lots of things changed between drafts for this book, but the ending note stayed more or less the same. I really wanted to leave these characters with both disappointment and hope: even if we don't get everything we want in the moment, it doesn't mean we give up entirely. I think I needed that feeling as much as Felix, Marya, and Sasha did!

More of this kind of thing? This was your best yet IMO. And way better than Dickens original.

I look forward to reading your novel about Fagin. Do you plan to write retellings about other Dickens' characters in the future? Which characters are you interested in?
Allison Epstein Thank you! I don't have any other Dickens retellings planned just yet, but I'm not ruling anything out. Another character I've always thought would be great fun to write about is Madame Defarge: something's going on there, and I'd love to know what.
