Todd Rhoda Our children were having dinner with us last summer and my wife was talking about how she used to take the seaplane from the East River to Fire Island every weekend. It was cheaper and took less time than actually driving. As she was saying that there was a pilot and three other passengers, I naturally thought, because I read a lot of mysteries, what if one of those three folks ended up dead the next morning.
Todd Rhoda I've always read. When I was in my late 20s, early 30s, I read a lot of Ross MacDonald and some of his paragraphs were so eloquent, so smooth, that I would reread them just to enjoy again. I said, if I could just write a little bit like that, I'd be happy.
Todd Rhoda Marketing my current book, A Swim for the Dying, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09..., which I'm finding is as hard as writing/editing the actual book!
Todd Rhoda Write every day; write about what you know. Let the other aspiring author's have fear and talk themselves out of writing.
Todd Rhoda Sense of accomplishment born of your own creativity, discipline, knowledge of subject matter, and love of books.
Todd Rhoda I was at a writer's speakers series and Robert B. Parker spoke. He was asked the same question. His answer was, "I don't really believe in it. Do plumber's have plumber's block?" I'm the same way. I think discipline and writing every day gives the process the inertia it needs.
Todd Rhoda True story: I was nonchalantly standing in the picture window of my home in Wichita Falls, Texas when the man across the street, in a drunken fit of rage, took his shotgun and aimed it at me. I hit the floor and grabbed an aluminum bat and I said to myself, "I may not be alive in a few minutes, but I'm darned sure he won't be eating solid food for the rest of his life."
Todd Rhoda Undoubtedly, the New York of Amor Towles' Rules of Civility. It was a super collider of art, literature, industry, music, culture, crime, and life.
Todd Rhoda Peyton Place (seriously!), The Mandibles, Mrs. McGinty's Dead, Black Noon, Taken at the Flood, Unsettled, Stained Glass, The Body in the Library, The Fifties, A Caribbean Mystery, The Last Week, They Do It with Mirrors, 4:50 From Paddington, The Bully Pulpit, Taken at the Flood
