My most recent completed novel, Billet-Doux from a Dead Prisoner, is Part II of a trilogy (The Unlikely Savior Trilogy). But oddly, the idea for the book DIDN'T come from Part I because I'd never intended to make it a series. The idea for the second book came to me while encountering a problem at a rental car agency...nothing to do with the plot of the book, but everything to do with how it starts. Then the rest of the story came to me as I drove that rental car 400 miles to my destination. Funny how that happens...

If I've already started a piece, I go back a chapter or section and read to the end. It invariably spurs ideas and I want to move on with the story. If I haven't started, I kick around ideas...I even have the term "What If..." stenciled over the window in my office. You can come up with all kinds of things when you start there.

Don't wait for the "right time" or for an entire story to exist in your mind before you start. There may never be a right time...and for many of us, the story takes on a life of its own after you start. Just start.

It's a toss up for me. One great thing about being a writer is that you create the world, including the people; I love the process. It's incredible fun. But...probably the best thing about being a writer is when others read what you write, and appreciate it -- or even love it. That's awesome.

I write. Even if it's without a plan or I know it's not useable, I write. It's kind of like taking a battering ram against a huge wall. You know it could take awhile to make a crack, and even longer to make a hole...but when you're through, you're through!
