Matthew Gillies Keep writing. The more you write, the better you get and the easier it gets. When I look at the first drafts of some of my novels from 15 years ago, I cringe at how juvenile the writing is compared to now.

My other advice, and this about publishing your books, do not let agents or publishers discourage you. They are in the business of making money and as such they look for commercial appeal. They are looking for safe. Be unique. Write the novel you would want to read.
Matthew Gillies Currently I am working on a dark fantasy novel called EveryWhen and a Space Opera called The Last of Them.
Matthew Gillies My most recent novel is The Acute Physiologies of Grotesque Monstrosities. I wanted to write a collection of short horror stories revolving around a variety of different monstrous creatures. Originally, the plan for the collection was to incorporate a page dedicated to describing the anatomy, characteristics and physicality of each monster, kind of like a biology text book.

While working on the short stories, I had to scrap the idea of writing the physiologies of each individual monster has I ended up compiling more short stories than what could fit in the collection. Because of this, I will eventually release a second collection of short stories.
Matthew Gillies I don't necessarily think it's writer's block with me, but more procrastination. If I have too many things going on at once, I can't get into the flow of writing. The best way to overcome writer's block or procrastination, find a quiet place, free of any kind of distractions, put on some headphones, open up the computer and start writing. The less you have stealing your attention, the more you can focus on writing and the moment you hit that stride, you won't want to stop.

Another idea for overcoming writer's block. Read a book. It will help inspire you.
