MATTHEW GILLIES is a Canadian dark fantasy, horror and science fiction author who began his adventure into literary fiction at an early age. Since he was a young boy, he’s long had a passion for telling stories. The day his mom brought home an electric typewriter was the day Matthew knew he wanted to become an author.

Like many emerging authors, the journey to publishing his work has been a long road. At the age of sixteen, Matthew wrote his first horror novel, The Experiment, and promptly followed up with the science fiction novel, The Pig Factory and the cyberpunk novel Oblivious Paradise.

If I have too many things going on at once, I can't get into the flow of writing. The best way to overcome writer's block or procrastination, find a quiet place, free of any kind of distractions, put on some headphones, open up the computer and start writing. The less you have stealing your attention, the more you can focus on writing and the moment you hit that stride, you won't want to stop.

Another idea for overcoming writer's block. Read a book. It will help inspire you. (less)

The more you write, the better you get and the easier it gets. When I look at the first drafts of some of my novels from 15 years ago, I cringe at how juvenile the writing is compared to now.

My other advice, and this about publishing your books, do not let agents or publishers discourage you. They are in the business of making money and as such they look for commercial appeal. They are looking for safe. Be unique. Write the novel you would want to read. (less)

HORROR’S NEWEST DISCIPLE

Horror fiction has its champions. The list is filled with monumental names. Figures like H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, Ray Bradbury, Mary Shelley, Richard Matheson, Clive Barker, Stephen King and many more have gone on to shape, define and make horror fiction what it is today.

They are the fathers of horror; the godfathers of the weird; the masters of the supernatural; Read more of this blog post »

“No one falls in love anymore, silly boy. Falling in love means falling out of love. Love is an emotion that comes as quickly as it goes. But choosing to love someone. Choosing to love people is a far greater accomplishment then falling in love. When you choose to love a person, you focus your energy and your emotions to loving that person for who they are. There is no such thing as falling in love. You either want to love that person or you don't...and if you choose to love that person, you work on loving that person every day, no matter what.”
