My current novel, "Lonesome Moon Road" involves a kidnapping, and the idea is based on a case I heard about when my late husband was in law enforcement. However, that case had many unresolved issues, and was merely the kernel of an idea for the novel.

I can't answer that, since I always wanted to write from the time I started reading. I can recall thinking even as a child, "Who wrote this? I want to do this!" I've always been writing in one form or another. A childhood diary, then journals, pen-friends, until becoming a journalist. And while pursuing that career, I also wrote fiction -- but did not try to publish. I do think it developed the "habit of writing" daily.

Write, write, write. Practice. Take a creative writing course, even if online only. Make sure you are seriously motivated, because this can be a lonely, solitary pursuit that may never pay off in financial terms.

I've always found that actually starting to write ends the block. Even if I am goofing off, responding to email and/or using writing prompts, the words flow once started.
However, in the past I have suffered from blocks that seem more about the reason for writing: is it worth it, or just a waste of time? Unless you have a deep need to write, I think the motivation just won't be there over time.
