The idea for the book slowly came together over about 10 years of seeing some nasty murder enquiries, one of which, where everyone suspected a single serial killer/rapist, and a few of us suspected a pair (and were proved right many years later), made a lasting impression on me. Once I had started writing, the story took on a life of its own and loads of real policing incidents, car chases, mistakes, pieces of luck and apocryphal tales all got caught up in the mix. The inspiration for the savage ending came very late in the writing process, and I had to go back and put pointers in the plot.
