Harry Hindes was born in West London in 1960, and after studying Geology at Exeter University, joined the Metropolitan Police in 1982. After a very active front-line career delivering 24-hour response policing, in 2001 he was head-hunted to create the Met's first Diversity Strategy in response to the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report. In 2005 he was posted to the Anti-Terrorist Branch where he served on the investigations of the London bombings, the plot to bring down seven airliners using liquid peroxide explosives, the Alexander Litvinenko murder and many others. A very successful hostage and crisis negotiator since 2003, and a Master of Science in Psychology, he retired as a Chief Inspector in 2013.

Once I had started writing, the story took on a life of its own and loads of real policing incidents, car chases, mistakes, pieces of luck and apocryphal tales all got caught up in the mix. The inspiration for the savage ending came very late in the writing process, and I had to go back and put pointers in the plot.
