I enjoy communicating with people. If it’s verbally, face to face, then that’s fine and I enjoy that too; however, I can reach more people with the written word and long after I’m gone the books I’ve managed to get finished will be available somewhere, for anyone who wishes to read them. I don’t have a ‘message’ to get across; I’m simply a storyteller. Being a writer allows me to tell stories.

I've been very lucky in that so far I haven't had any real concerns regarding long term 'blocks'. What I do when I get temporarily stuck is, I get up and go and do something completely different for a couple of hours; perhaps I watch some sport, potter around in the garden or go shopping with the wife!
When I get back to writing it's a lot easier to pick up the thread and get on with things than if you sit and stare at the blank page for hours on end.
The other tip I would give is, stick to writing about things that are in your comfort zone, then at least you can be confident that you know what you're writing about. If you need to include something you know absolutely nothing about, don't try to 'wing it', do loads of research, make copious notes and then the battle is already partly won!

(view spoiler)[After 'Unfinished Business' I wanted to write a cosy detective series featuring two of the characters from the book. I have the story line for the first book in my head already. My wife however, insisted that I continue writing about 'the bad character' from the first two novels; she enjoyed reading about him far more! So on holiday in September I tried to imagine what could have happened to him; six weeks later I had taken him through four new challenges and he was primed to tackle a major terrorist plot to sabotage the 2012 London Olympics. The second book 'Gold, Silver and Bombs' is coming in 2015. (hide spoiler)]
