Thank you for your question! I can't specify a mystery in my life, but my books come from my experiences. In Human Sacrifice, my research with the Maya in Yucatan, Mexico and my experience at academic conferences came together to think what would happen if there was a murder at an anthropology conference in Mexico. In Culture Shock, I have visited several retirement communities in Florida and witnessed their quiet, affluent lifestyle, and thought about what would happen if their peaceful lifestyle were upturned by violence. In my next book, Rites of Passage, I am imagining an older woman with a long-time desire who disappears into the Yucatan peninsula.

My most recent book comes out of my career as an anthropologist specializing in Mayan society, and many years of attending conferences. I have decided to write a mystery in which anthropologists are getting killed off at a conference in Mexico! I am having a lot of fun with this book!

After a career as a professor of anthropology and writing two ethnographies, I am writing fiction. I am completing a mystery novel and have a second one in first draft form. I have always enjoyed reading mysteries, especially the British mystery, and am discovering how challenging this genre can be.
