I just finished "Guantanamo/Death Investigation at Camp Kreyol," available as an Amazon ebook. It is an NCIS police procedural with elements of multi-cultural espionage.
Please see my blog for further details.

I'm actually listening to more books (downloaded from Librivox) than reading. I recommend Charlotte Bronte's "Villette" and Conan-Doyle's "The Lost World." The former is excellent, if not as dramatic as "Jane Eyre." And the latter is an entertaining adventure story with much more humor than the Sherlock Holmes stories.
I did re-read "Brave New World" and "1984" this spring. They seemed timely, somehow.

For better or worse, I am using what I believe to be my greatest skill.
"Fish got to swim, birds got to fly,"
Writers gotta write.

Everything is inspiring, but the inspiration may not strike immediately. Every conversation you hear, every scene you view, ask yourself: "What if?" and consider how the conversation or view might play out if something were added or changed.

I often write the last scene of a story first. If you feel blocked at one point, pick up the narrative at another scene. When you return to your "roadblock," you will see it with new eyes. Also, consider that the block may be simply because that section is not working. Save it elsewhere, but consider whether the narrative may work better without it anyway.

To write, to finish what you start. And not to be prickly about criticism.

I extensively interviewed the Marine general who commanded the Emergency Humanitarian camps set up at Guantanamo Naval Base in 1991 to accommodate Haitian refugees escaping a military coup in their country. At the same time, the Soviet Union was crumbling and Cuba itself seemed vulnerable to another revolution of its own. It struck me then as an extraordinary setting for a thriller that would include complex racial/cultural clashes. The events there were further complicated by American politics that influenced all three countries.
In my novel, when a violent death occurs in one of the Haitian camps, the only NCIS special agent on the island, Fran Setliff, is brought into the investigation. There is a Haitian proverb: “Tou sa ou we, se pa sa.” It means that everything is not what it seems. And that proves especially true at Guantanamo.
