Wayne Clark My parents were readers and books seemed magical. When I was a young teen I decided I wanted to write fiction some day. I also wanted to be a newspaperman because my father had once been one. I found a manual for a journalism correspondence course he'd taken a long before and studied it. One thing led to another an I was working at a newspaper by the age of 17. By my early 20s I was trying my hand at fiction.
Wayne Clark Write write write. Write anything but write something every day. It doesn't have to be fiction. It can some little scene that you've imagined, or a description of someone, or of something you've witnessed. People don't write letters anymore but they can be crafted, too. So write anything. Grocery lists don't count, though.
Wayne Clark It allows daydreaming to be my job. I'm an inveterate daydreamer and it serves my writing well.
Wayne Clark The short answer is that I'm not working on another novel. I'm still very busy learning the ropes of doing my own marketing and promotion. However the long answer would admit to toying with resurrecting an idea I worked on many years ago for a totally different kind of book, a novel set in New France in the 17th or 18th century. I researched that idea for several years. I probably didn't write it at the time because I had too much research, boxes of it. If I restart the project I think I'll take a run at it without opening those boxes until I'm well into the story.
Wayne Clark I hate to call it writer's block because I believe in keeping your fingers typing even if you don't know where you're going. Don't censor yourself. You might have to discard that day's work but you might also find yourself going down a road you'd never thought of before, one that helps your story grow.
