Kasey Riley Wow, you mean I'm supposed to have a list? I tend to be fickle and decide on the spur of the moment what I want to read next. Sometimes I'll stick with the same author I just finished and sometimes, even if I enjoyed the book, that author is the LAST I want to read. Same with genre. I'll run two or three of the same genre and then I'll switch, or if I'm blue, I'll pick up a book I truly enjoyed and read it again...because I know it will bring me up out of my mood.
So, I don't have a list, but I can tell you I read close to a book a week unless I'm very busy. It soothes my brain to read, even when watching TV.
Kasey Riley My life is kind of quiet, but every ride in the woods calls to me with possible mysteries or stories. It is why I love going for a ride alone from time to time...it helps me iron out stories I'm working on, and sometimes come up with new ideas. A rustling off the trail could be someone watching, or maybe an injured person trying to escape a villain. See? Mysteries and plots are everywhere - I just have to be open to them.

Sometimes in doing research, I come up with new mysteries. That is true of the research I did for Do Not Assume (due out later this summer). My husband and I both did DNA tests and the results brought us new family members...I found the children of the son my mother gave up for adoption in WWII and Jeff found a half-brother he'd heard rumors about. Either of these issues could bring on plot ideas.
Kasey Riley I don't have one...I think my favorite couple is still out there; waiting to be discovered. In my own works, I like Bethany and Roger from Desperate Endurance because I can relate to her lifestyle and his strength. Stephanie and Doyle would be a close second because I love their sense of humor and ability to adapt to situations.
Kasey Riley Go for a ride or go fishing. Strange how being outside helps my mind to clear.
Kasey Riley Write about things you know and understand unless you are writing fantasy. But, even with fantasy, you need to have relationships and adventures...or the book becomes a drag.
The other thing is never, ever stop reading. Reading helps you to develop as a writer; if for no other reason than you find things that you don't want to write like. Recently, I read a book with so many side stories, that the plot was lost. Now, I'm more aware of that and more careful not to do the same.
Kasey Riley Another book based in Riverview. This one more of a romance than a mystery, but it does have suspense and danger to add a dash of spice to the romance.
Kasey Riley I read several books supposedly dealing with horses and one with Endurance that were so far off the mark that I could not finish them. This got me to thinking that I could do so much better on both subjects and I began to write. Most of all, writing became fun and challenging. I still read quite a bit and find myself understanding the writers better than I did before I became one.
Kasey Riley Desperate Endurance came from traveling alone on the highway to rides and the thoughts of "what would I do if?". My soon to be published book, Skeleton Trail, came from riding along in the woods, getting off the marked trail and thoughts of what could possibly be found out there. My saddle time is thinking time when I ride alone. When riding with friends, they help me hash out details and plots - when we aren't discussing other things.
