Write about things you know and understand unless you are writing fantasy. But, even with fantasy, you need to have relationships and adventures...or the book becomes a drag.
The other thing is never, ever stop reading. Reading helps you to develop as a writer; if for no other reason than you find things that you don't want to write like. Recently, I read a book with so many side stories, that the plot was lost. Now, I'm more aware of that and more careful not to do the same.
