I met the Johnston family for dinner last week, Mark, Tracy, and the two kids. They put up quite the struggle, but in the end the flavor added to the stew was well worth it.

Probably some place like the Star Trek or Star Wars or similar (galactic extent) civilization, and then look for a world in the galaxy I liked while keeping my options open with a space craft.

I don't actually have a list this year. Summer like like it will be a heavy writing period with Part 2 of the Balance Trilogy, and I normally don't read a lot of new things while I'm writing. I'll probably re-read a few books from the past.

My life would never be much of a mystery; an adventure now and then, but hardly mysterious.

I'll make up an answer, a classic one—Elizabeth Bennet & Fitzwilliam Darcy, I suppose, although I really don't have favorites in general.

I published The Boy Who Ran last November, that story grew from a set of themes that I was thinking about. I decided to write a Middle Grade parable-like story and that became The Boy Who Ran. It's set 6000 years ago in N. America.
The Balance was more complicated and it was actually the first book I wrote, although I withheld publishing. That story began more as a character study that grew into a book and the story is actually too big for one volume, so I'll complete the tale in one or two more volumes.

Not sure—it just comes. Most plots start as a concept and quickly evolve into a story in my head, although they may change several times before I finish the work.

A story called, The Balance. It's a YA novel set 200 yeas after an apocalyptic nuclear war in a place called the Land. The Land is ruled by a theocracy called the Council of God and they've banned most technology, so we have people who've lived in a modern world using horses and who've been forced to abandon anything that uses electricity.
The Land was ruled by a collaboration between the Council and another group called the Order (a technology organization), but it was discovered that the Order had been experimenting with an advanced form of genetic engineering, coupled with post conception manipulation of the fetuses to augment new characteristics. This caused the Purge of the Order and anything doing with technology and the execution of the engineered humans as demons. The main character, Phoebe, is one of these leftover engineered humans, hiding in plain sight and trying to deal with what the Order did to her.
I expect to publish The Balance in December and have published a prologue and 6 chapters on my web site michaelselden.com

There are two things you need to do: Read, Write. It's the only way you get better, and expect that you'll be better in the future. Reading is almost as good as writing, especially if you look at a work as a writer, trying to see how the other authors handled things

Creating new worlds, new characters, and then getting lost in them.

I take a walk. Writer's block for me usually last no more than a day. I do most of my plotting and plot conflict resolution while walking. If the writing simply isn't coming that day, I don't try to force it. Just back off for a day.
