Arley L. Dial You might try the book 'Albuquerque Remembered' by Howard Bryan. It is a well written and informative history on Albuquerque, and touches on many topics over the course of that city's long life. Hope you enjoy the read and the trip!
Arley L. Dial Living in my own head and feeling like I'm accomplishing something (whether I am or not is still in question) at the same time. Also the fame. Definitely the fame.
Arley L. Dial Each of my characters is a little bit of me of course. Some of them are who I would like to be, and others are probably closer to who I actually am. It's hard to say who is the most like me, but I would probably say Almer from the beginning of Plews. He has no solid idea about what he is supposed to be doing, and he takes opportunities as they come just because he doesn't have a better idea. I'm not sure if the line is Almer's but "I guess I had better do something, even if it's wrong," sums up the idea nicely.
Arley L. Dial Jack London said "You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club". As a writer of historical fiction, I spend a lot of time reading history books, and journals written during my favored time period. Quite often, I find some little tidbit that acts as a seed from which a story will grow. For instance, John Colter was a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Just before they returned to St. Louis after two years in the wilderness, Colter elected to return to the Rockies with a couple of trappers. Wondering why he would do such a thing became the novel 'Plews'.
Arley L. Dial A western about a gambler in a boom town in the 1890's. It is lighter than my last two books, but that is why I chose the project. My last novel Nagodzaa, was such a tragedy that I thought I would take a break and write something a little more fun. So far, no one has died.
Arley L. Dial Set a daily goal and strive to reach it every day. This work comes a little at at time, diligence is the key.
Arley L. Dial I try not to get in a hurry. I just go one word at a time. If what comes out is garbage, that is what revisions are for.
