How do you get inspired to write?

Arley L. Dial Jack London said "You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club". As a writer of historical fiction, I spend a lot of time reading history books, and journals written during my favored time period. Quite often, I find some little tidbit that acts as a seed from which a story will grow. For instance, John Colter was a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Just before they returned to St. Louis after two years in the wilderness, Colter elected to return to the Rockies with a couple of trappers. Wondering why he would do such a thing became the novel 'Plews'.
