I am outlining the sequel to The Kid and the Keepers. In it, Jeru will be in his late teens and committed to a quest. He will visit various sites of supreme loves, especially those of musicians and visual artists. The experience will compel him to ponder questions about love between and among people. How does one/society overcome obstacles of ignorance, intolerance, past mistakes, self doubt, time, space, etc. to develop loving relationships?

I witnessed two talented young musicians as each abandoned his instrument. One, a trumpeter who started at age six, lost his passion for music after becoming bogged down by practice and the travails of adolescence. The other, an eighth-grade saxophonist, quit the school jazz band just weeks after playing an awesome solo in a Miles Davis composition, Freddie Freeloader. He joined my elective class. When I asked why he quit, he replied, "It's not cool to play." Their experiences stirred me to take on indifference. A question came to me: How can one overcome this obstacle? I imagined that witnessing jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in their prime would motivate anyone who listens. Jeru Johnstone had to go back in time to listen. And he finds his mojo while with these greats.
