Initially, a dream. It was then reinforced by an email from my mom that she had written during the time my dad was dying from cancer. She gave the advice to never underestimate the power of simply touching someone. I pondered this for a long time. There is great power in human touch--even the simplest brush of the hand. Skin-on-skin. It has no replacement. And thus, Wendy, the main character of Colorworld was born.

I thought I had no talents but I needed an outlet, being the mother of 4 small children. I literally woke up one day and thought, "I need to write a book." So I started writing one. I fell in love instantly. I expected writing to be a short-lived romance, but we're going on over 4 years now. The googly-eyes, and racing heart haven't left me yet. Publishing my first book back in December of 2013 was when I finally "put a ring on it," knowing that there was no turning back. I have no regrets. It just keeps getting better.

Lumaworld. Book 3 in the Colorworld series.
My thoughts, however, are on later books in the series. I'm dying to find out how it all ends! As a writer, you always think you know how your story will go, but it inevitably goes a different way--a better way.
Aside from that, I have a notebook full of non-Colorworld ideas that I'd like to take a stab at. For example, I have a pretty well developed fantasy world that's a little steampunky, and a neat male main character to go with it, but no time to write it!

Your first draft WILL be crap. Accept it. Embrace it. Expect it. Do NOT try to write a finished product on the first try. You will only disappoint yourself and you will take far too long to get the story out if you're busy quibbling over getting your first draft perfect.

Seeing the story move forward all on its own. It's like being a reader, watching the story unfold, but way better because it's coming out of my own head. I write plot elements, having no idea what they have to do with the story, and somehow, miraculously, they make total sense later on. There is no better thrill. Also, because it comes from my own head, it tells me something about myself even if it's not immediately apparent. But as the story pieces click into place, I understand myself better and I get life because of it. Writing has that power. I have never discovered anything in life that can do that for me so effectively.

I stop working on the current project and write something completely different for a little while. Or I take one of the concepts in the book and research it more deeply to get my juices flowing. If I am on a deadline, I go into my closet, turn off the lights, and force myself to think through it without distraction.
