A fire on the sailboat next to ours was the inspiration for my second novel, Sanctuary. It was never determined whether the fire was arson, possibly set by the owner, or a maintenance issue. The owner collected a large sum in insurance and disappeared. In my book, he was murdered on board his boat.

The story is based on a real-life "me too" experience that affected someone where I worked. Combined this with the unsolved Gilgo Beach serial murders on LI.
