I don't know if it's a mystery or not, but I've always wanted to write a book that details my mom's life as it was and my mom's life as I imagine it might have been had her childhood sweetheart not drowned when he was in the army.
Relationships are interesting and I like thinking about and exploring What ifs.

I always have a hard time picking a favorite character. One of my favorite ones to write is Neutria, the giant assassin spider. Making sure she sounds alien without being incomprehensible is a fun challenge. Plus, it's great to be in the head of something that thinks of everything as food, mate, or enemy.

They've all had their ups and downs, but for pure fun it would have to be Bug Queen. It was a joy to write all the way through and even when I would get stuck, I didn't feel the gloomy "this book totally sucks" thing that seems to crop up with most everything else I'm writing.
Maybe it had something to do with the alien fungus and the bugs and the crazy pothead turned world-ender. I don't know. :D

Find your own truths. Don't listen to what the author next door has to say about how to write. That only works for her or him. You are your own person with unique needs, talents, and strengths. Find what works for you and forget the rest.
Also, keep writing. KEEP AT IT! All writing is hard. Sometimes it sucks donkey balls. Keep writing anyway.

I used to wonder this myself. Then I found the Magic Spreadsheet and wed myself to the concept of writing every damn day, inspired or not. Amazing how much inspiration can be won through the practice of expecting it to be there (and when you write every day, you are telling your brain, "You are required to come up with awesome shit. Here I am. Where are you?")

The idea for my most recent book, Bug Queen (available on Amazon to pre-order and out on Halloween 2014) came from a silly conversation with a fellow author. What if a person could control all the bugs? Can you imagine if she got mad and you and made head lice flock to you? Ew.
Then I got this imagine in my head of a woman standing with her hair and skirts blown back, an epic tornado of bugs behind her. She dropped her arm and the bugs--millions of bugs--attacked.
It was also around this time I was watching cordyceps videos. (Google it. I dare you. :D )
These two things made story ideas spark and spark in my head.
