H.P. Wood Hi Rhonda! Thanks so much for writing, and for giving Magruder's a chance! Your note made my day.
Yeah it is kind of a hard book to categorize. I would not call it SciFi either, but there is that robot-character so I can see how somebody went there.
I am working on a couple things but I am s-l-o-w. I promise I'll get there. Follow me on twitter (hilarywrites) or facebook (HPWoodWriter) and you'll be in the loop when, eventually, I finish! :)
Happy holidays!

H.P. Wood Of course not, silly. Hoffman's book came out in 2014, mine was bought by Sourcebooks in 2015. I can't rip people off nearly that fast, are you nuts?!? I type too slow, for one thing.

Magruder's took 5-6 years to finish, maybe more--it's been so long I lose track. Which is to say that the initial drafts were done long before Hoffman's book came out. I was literally working on a revision at the moment I saw the first review of Hoffman's book, and I cried and cried because I thought no one would ever publish a book about a similar topic by a non-famous person.

But as it turned out, there's room in the world for different books about Coney Island at the turn of the century. Sometimes similar ideas occur to similar people. Even to celebrities like Hoffman and nobodies like myself. It's a thing that happens, for real.

Be nice to each other, y'all!

H.P. Wood Hey Cherei, thanks for reading Magruder's--I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your question, too! And the answer is: I hope so! And I have tons of ideas for "now what." (Here's one super-vague hint: Think unintended consequences.) I am working on something totally unrelated now, but I would be crazy-thrilled to have Magruders 2 be next. It just boils down to if enough people want it that the publisher wants it, too. So I guess it's up to y'all, actually! Tell your friends! ;)
H.P. Wood Thanks for this question, HP! The answer is, no it is not. It would probably be fine for older teens: it has some violence, grossness, and the occasional bad word. But it's an adult book.

What it REALLY is not--and the reason why I'm so glad I asked myself this question--is a middle-grade book. I've seen it added to a couple of kid lit bookshelves here on Goodreads . . . . I guess because of the pretty cover? Please know that it is not an MG title. I'd hate for people to be confused, disappointed, or disturbed. I read Iain Banks's WASP Factory too young, so I know whereof I speak here!
