Amy Reece Writer's block is the one thing that my students worry about the most. I tell them that writer's block is a myth. There is no such thing as writer's block; there is only not writing. Once you begin writing, the writer's block will go away. The goal for each day should not be to write something wonderful. The goal should merely be to write. You will be amazed how wonderful that writing will become. We have had some hysterical and poignant poetry and prose written to the myth of writer's block.
Amy Reece The best thing about being a writer is the writing. It is wonderful to lose yourself so deeply in the writing that the characters and the story take over. When you laugh out loud at the things your characters say because you had no idea that they would say that, then your writing has gone to a deeper level. The second best thing about writing is the community of writers that you will find when you write. Their generosity towards one another and their support of your work will astound you.
Amy Reece My advice for young writers is really so boring. It is this: write. When you write, you get better at writing. If you're like me, and see life through the lens of settings and characters, then write. If you always have stories running through your head, then write. Everything else will follow.
Amy Reece I am currently working on my second novel, Haven's Home. It is the story of a young girl who lands in a foster home while her mother is put into rehab for alcohol abuse. Haven, the angry main character, finds herself on a farm in the midwest with two best friends; Lane, a bold young man who is confined to a wheelchair, and Angel, a Connemara mare who works at the local therapeutic riding center.
Amy Reece I am a teacher of writing so I have a passion for the process. My inspiration comes from my family, my students, my surroundings, and my memories.
Amy Reece I was driving my youngest daughter home from school and listening to the oldies station on the radio. "It must have been great to grow up in the '60s," she sighed. Mmmmm I don't know if "great" would be the word I'd choose. Regarding Jeffrey was born from that comment and my husband's vinyl collection.
