I researched animals going extinct in the world and discovered the vaquita porpoise in the Gulf of California. As I dug deeper, I found myself enthralled with the richness of marine diversity in that area and felt my personal history with Mexican culture would serve me well in writing about this subject.

I write a journal every day in which I continually ask myself questions about what is happening in my life, what I found captivating, what stirs my soul. I keep a list of inspiring book ideas and add notes when thoughts come along. I take these ideas and use them as topics for my weekly blog and if a topic gets my toes tapping, I'll do an outline. Ultimately, I go with my gut for what project feels like the one to do next.

I'm creating a kids' book about a porpoise facing extinction and a disabled Mexican boy trying to figure out what to do with his life. This story lets me honor my need to share a vision for a sustainable world while allowing me the pleasure of creating characters and story lines centered on marine themes, a world I'm particularly fond of.

Start writing. Keep writing, every day if possible. Write what you know about. Listen to Haig and Vogler's audio book "The Hero's Two Journeys," and get real about meaningful story structure. Listen to and study the great writers. I'm working my way through the list of Pulitzer Prize winning authors. What a fascinating group of mentors, all accessible via the internet.
Start writing. Keep writing. Write what you know. Be authentic, whatever that means.
Never give up. Good writing is a craft and great craftsmanship takes time.
I wish you the best!

Being a writer is my creative world. I control it. I make it happen. It's complete freedom to be my creative self. True, with freedom comes responsibility but I'm happy to have that vs. the yoke of dragging myself along building someone else's dreams.

I don't sweat it. I've found that when I simply follow my gut and do what feels right each day, including acting responsibly and honoring commitments, as well as feeding whatever creative impulses come along, my writing gets done. Yes, I do have a daily schedule for writing and yes, sometimes it's not something I feel like doing. But I know that if I write nothing, there is nothing I can review and impove so I keep filling up pages. To paraphrase the line from Apollo 13, "Writer's block is not an option."
