Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson Hi Chuck, Thanks for your interest and sorry to be slow in answering. I had a parent who was very ill for some time and I'm just getting back into the swing of things. Hermes Press has published DC Comics Before Superman: Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's Pulp Comics. It came out in a limited edition at this year's San Diego Comic Con. This is not the full biography but a shorter version with over 170 pages of rarely seen comics from MWN's era. It's available on Amazon, at Hermes Press and your local comic book shop. Let me know what you think!
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson I've been working towards a biography of Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson for at least 10 years. The publisher at Hermes Press and I had talked about putting out a second book of the Major's pulp stories related to the comics they became. It dawned on me that rather than doing a reprint of the pulp stories we should do reprints of the comics themselves. This is what Hermes Press does best. David Armstrong, a well-known collector and historian of comics did the Herculean task of rounding up over 170 pages of rare original art for the book. I wrote an abbreviated biography using the comics to tell the story graphically. I felt this would be a good way to introduce the Major to a larger audience.
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson I never thought about this. I don't have aha moments. It's just something that is present in my life. I have been writing since I was about 8 years old--poetry, little stories and it simply evolved from there. I started out in theatre as a college major and continued to pursue that as a profession for many years. Most of my experience was in writing scripts and plays so it's always been pretty organic to my life.
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson A full biography of my grandfather, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson. The working title is The Major Who Made Comics. There are several other media projects happening as well. I always have more than one project going at a time.
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson I consider myself an aspiring writer as there is always so much more to learn. The advice I'd give myself is read, read, read. Reading all kinds of writing helps me to be a better writer and practicing my craft helps me be a better writer whether it's a blog post or a magazine article or working on a book.
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson Being in an industry I love and working with people whom I respect and whose company I thoroughly enjoy.
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson I clean out a closet or I go for a long bike ride. While I'm working away or cycling along I suddenly find myself thinking about the piece I'm working on and it all starts to flow. The other solution is that I often have deadlines and when I procrastinate I have no choice but to sit down and start writing. No excuses and no whining--okay, maybe a little whining!
