I think the best thing about being a writer is getting the chance to build worlds that other people can spend time in. I love introducing readers to the visions I see in my head. If I could paint I would do that, but alas I'm a stick figure artist. Therefore I have to share my imagination in the best way I know how, and that's to write it down.

I have had an internal narrator in my head for as long as I can remember. The only way to silence that narrator is to write down the narration on paper. The inspiration to write starts with what that narrator is talking about. Sometimes it's a character thrown into a strange situation, sometimes it's a place that feels like it should be recorded. When I get to the point where the narrator is talking about something I'm interested in learning more about, then I start planning out a story.

(view spoiler)[One of the characters in my book is based on a drawing I did back in high school of a woman hooded in a cloak. I was so intrigued by her that I expanded onto who she was, and started drawing a woman that turns into my favorite animal -- a black panther. Up until the last stages of planning this novel, I honestly thought this would be Fela's story. Then I realized that this entire journey is Mylena's. This is her tale to tell, and Fela is merely a feature of that larger narrative. But she has a fascinating life, and what has happened to her entwines with the challenges that Mylena will face in the Dark Plains, so I am having a lot of fun sharing that life with the readers. Read. I know many people say that you should write everyday, but until you have full on love affair with someone else's book, you won't truly understand what drives you to want to create your own. So I say read, anything you can get your hands on that is well written and that makes you think. When you have a good base of books to draw inspiration from, your story will start demanding to be written -- so let it.

I step away and do something else. Sometimes a story needs to percolate on the back burner for a while, or sometimes your brain is just looking for the right inspiration in order to push through a block. That inspiration comes from outside your genre usually, so I will read other books that aren't fantasy, watch TV shows or play games. All the while I'm thinking about the story I'm writing, but it's in simmer mode. When inspiration hits again, I know it's time to head back to the computer to push the story forward.

I am currently writing a sequel to Shadow of the Owl, called Shadow of the Panther. The plot of the book would be a spoiler if you haven't read my first novel.
