I'm not really sure where I got the idea. I knew I was going to participate in NaNoWriMo with my students and I had some opinions on government and always have been interested in dystopias and the post-apocalyptic world. Lucia is a lot like me--or how I want to be--and I think that really helped me get the story going and the other characters and ideas just kind of evolved out of Lucia's life, hopes, and expectations. I also am a huge fan of Emily Dickinson and that played a role in my novels. Other inspiration came from books like The Giver, Divergent, Hunger Games, and Matched. I love a good YA novel!

I am a huge fan of Pinterest as well as keep images that inspire me in a folder on my computer. Images really tap into my creativity and helps me to establish the setting in my mind. It's also great when I need inspiration describing a particular element, such as a building, place, or even an outfit a character is wearing.

I deal with writer's block from a tip I got while participating in NaNoWriMo--just keep writing! Even if you write something totally ridiculous, you can always edit it out later, but it may be just what you need to get over the hump. Also, I make the commitment to write almost every single day, even if it is only a few hundred words.
