With poetry I enjoy both my own internal inspirations and the challenge of an outside prompt. Internal sparks can be anything from a particular metaphor that comes to mind, an image, or even just the pleasing phonetics of a certain pairing of words. That spark just has to be something that feels like it deserves to be fleshed out, to become the central focus of an explanation or narrative, or just the first kernel that leads to a bigger idea or picture. But outside prompts are great too! I love the challenge of a publication saying "can you write a poem about martial arts?" Or "can you write a poem inspired by this painting?"

I've been writing poems specific to certain submission calls by many online and print poetry collections. I've only successfully gotten into 1 so far, so maybe there'll be another self-published collection from me eventually, called "Rejection Letters."
My ongoing sci-fi novella on Amazon Kindle Vella is also now nearing completion. The next published chapter will probably be the last! (But I'm not in a hurry to finish since it appears that no one is reading it.)

Currently in the growing stack: "What If 2" by Randall Munroe, for fun, and "Lament from Epirus" by Christopher King, for knowledge. Those are probably the next 2, but like many people, the overall stack there by the bed is larger than I'll probably ever get through.

"But you see," the fading genie answered, in words as curved as knives, "as the last alive, alone, you are by default the most handsome of all, as you desired!" Then, behind a smile like a setting sun, "and your wish for immortality is now also yours to enjoy for all time."

Star Trek. I'd probably be spending my life begging The Federation to let me join Starfleet as a Xeno-musicologist.
