Goodreads asked Ron Perovich:

How do you get inspired to write?

Ron Perovich With poetry I enjoy both my own internal inspirations and the challenge of an outside prompt. Internal sparks can be anything from a particular metaphor that comes to mind, an image, or even just the pleasing phonetics of a certain pairing of words. That spark just has to be something that feels like it deserves to be fleshed out, to become the central focus of an explanation or narrative, or just the first kernel that leads to a bigger idea or picture. But outside prompts are great too! I love the challenge of a publication saying "can you write a poem about martial arts?" Or "can you write a poem inspired by this painting?"
