Can you tell us a two-sentence horror story?

Martin Connolly It had been a lovely day at the office up until lunchtime, when, to my dismay, I opened my bento-box to discover decapitated heads and mutilated body parts, yet again. And there I was thinking my wife had understood when I’d told her never to put those fishy bits in with the fried chicken.

Good luck with your project, it looks great. A few years ago I read Vasconez's work and found it compelling. I searched for a short story of his which I could attempt to translate. I chose the shortest I could find. It was my first... Anyway, I forget exactly, but I think I telephoned the bookshop in Quito, to ask how to contact Javier. I gave them my email, and they contacted him. If I recall correctly. Yes, the telephone was so vital. I hope that helps. I forget the bookshop, but I think it was a bookshop, one which is quite important in Quito. Best wishes.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Martin Connolly I heard a Japanese student tell this story once. When I heard it, I was hooked. It terrified me and drew me in completely. That was 20 years ago. I don't even know where she is now.

How do you get inspired to write?

Martin Connolly I usually write (a) poetry and (b) academic articles on literature. I get inspired to write because I love something and want to pursue it.
