I usually leave it be for a while. I'm a firm believer that the story will tell itself, and if you're struggling then it's time for a break. When I was writing Lady Cannibal, I took numerous breaks towards the end because the story hadn't figured itself out, and I believe forcing a story just makes it harder work for the editor.

I fell into it, in a way. Way back when I did my GCSEs, I wrote a short story exploring human grief, and that got me thinking about writing. I started off with poetry, which was morbid and depressing, and then moved to prose after my degree.

Ironically, the idea came to me at 2 am. I was in bed and the opening line to the book just popped into my head. It was one of those strange "Eureka!" moments that you pray you remember six hours later - thankfully I did!
