You just have to plow through the downtime. You can't treat what you write as precious. Sometimes the book you're writing doesn't actually start until page 100, but you have to write those other 99 pages to know that.

Not having a boss to answer to. Being there as your children grow up. Not having to deal with traffic every day. Loving what you do.

Don't give up. Don't get discouraged. Don't let the bastards beat you down. As James A. Michener once told me: Get the book on the shelf. You'll be surprised at what can happen next.

I want to write a screenplay based on my last novel: Begin Again Finnegan. And I want to get back to a novel I started a while ago about a guy having adventures in Africa.

Something in my gut tells me I'm not happy. And when I am writing, I am happy. So it may not be inspiration. It might be guilt. But whatever it is, my body tells me to get to work.

I've struggled with how to write a memoir and yet not appear as if I was telling "tales out of school" so to speak. Because I have spent so much time with so many very famous people, I didn't want my memoir to become something for the gossip trade. When I finally realized the way to tell the story is to make it "my" story--that is, how did a kid from the streets of Brooklyn wind up on Marlon Brando's island for ten days with the reclusive actor, or spend 9 months going head-to-head with Barbra Streisand at the height of her career?--then it became easier to write. And that's how I wrote the first volume of what looks like a 2-part memoir: You Show Me Yours.
