From the dark and dank basement, footsteps thumped up the steps. Trapped in my wheelchair, my mouth froze in a silent scream when the head emerged.

I have a confession. I have more books on my reading list and in my library than I can get to. My list keeps getting longer and longer every time I see a title that intrigues me.
There are a few non-fiction books that I absolutely want to read this year, if not this summer. They are already in my library waiting for me. Here are some of them:
1) Search Inside Yourself by Chade-Meng Tan
2) Emotional Agility by Susan David
3) Winning by Jack Welch and Suzy Welch
4) Success--The Psychology of Achievement by Deborah A. Olson.
On the fiction side, I want to read:
1) Gently to Nagasaki by Joy Kogawa
2) The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks
3) American Gods by Neil Gaiman

I went to a boarding school in India where one of the nuns who looked after our laundry apparently jumped from the balcony and died. Rumours abound that she was pushed or some paranormal activity occurred. I'm planning to build a story around that some day.

Many of my contemporaries from the seventies and eighties never met their spouses until they arrived at the new country where they were to marry; hence the title for my novel, Picture Bride. Sometimes these women were tricked into marrying someone who turned out to be different from their expectations. I wanted to give these women a voice in my book.

There is no muse inspiring me to write. I write because I want to. For short pieces, if a writing prompt sounds interesting, I'll write in response to it. Or I'll pound my brain to come up with ideas when there's a submission call and I feel like participating. Once I start a novel or any long project, I park myself in front of my computer whenever I can and just type.

I have completed writing my second novel. Although I started writing my third novel, I'm not sure that I want to keep going with it at this point. I have some ideas for a non-fiction book, and I'm still fleshing them out.

I enjoy speaking with aspiring writers. I tell them to focus on their writing, hone their craft, and read books. It's a long process and you have to have the mental grit to keep going. Find writers' groups on line and in your community, or befriend a writer. The journey becomes more interesting when you can discuss your work, review other's work and have them review yours.

I love the creative process and words. When I get a good idea and then I'm able to capture its essence with lyrical or poetic accuracy, I get a huge sense of satisfaction. I love when readers reach out to me and tell me that I've touched them somehow.

This depends upon whether I'm starting a brand new project or I'm in the middle of one. For new projects, if nothing creative comes to mind, I just start typing my thoughts. It's like I'm loosening my brain by chipping away at it with my moving fingers. Sometimes, some sense might even come out of those mindless words. For existing projects, I usually read the stuff I wrote previously, and I start editing it. By the time I get to the point where I have to continue, I usually have some ideas about how I want to proceed.
