You know, there are gaps in the record for my dad's service during WWII. And, I'd heard lots of family stories from my wife's side. So, I took parts of them and worked them into my novel, Counterclockwise. Creating a thriller using my Dad's backstory and a few details I knew about him, combining that with a tale about my wife's great aunt who went toe-toe with a mafia boss. Those are jus the tip of the iceberg.

Tough call. Perhaps something from Edgar Rice Burroughs for sheer adventure, or maybe, The DaVinci Code--not because the book was good, it didn't think it was that great, but the idea of a modern quest would be cool.

That comes from a lot of directions. Sometimes a conversation with one of my sons or friend will spark something. Others, I will see or hear about a story that is just incredible. Hannibal's invasion of Italy comes to mind, as does the sacrifice of Sparta or the Taffy 3 sailors in WWII. In Sheer Will, nothing quite as heroic in the epic sense, still, the nothingness with which the Port of Houson began and how it overcame all the odds to become a major US port just boggles the mind. It was a no-quit proposition.

Coming up soon is a new book called, "Brands in History." It is based on my blog of the same name, but expands on some of those entries and includes new ones not on the blog. It's about staying power in our colelctive memory—why do some events or characters endure millenia beyond their existence.
I'm also working on a centennial book for the Port of Beaumont. Most people think cowboys and oil when it comes to Texas, but the upper Texas Gulf Coast has quite a nautical heritage.
Beyond all this, well, there is a novel coming out later in the year.

I was introduced to the Port of Houston story while working on a Houston Ship Channel centennial project. My research into the history took me down some intriguing rabbit holes.
