Music inspires me A LOT. I keep playlists of songs for my books, and even for each character, songs that depict their feelings or the themes of the story. Listening to those songs helps me to get more emotionally involved. Watching good dramatic movies, or reading other books also inspires me to write. They get the wheels in my head spinning and I find I'm able to access my more creative side.

Some writers claim that writer's block isn't real, but for me, it is. I get it when I'm not exactly sure what scene comes next. In that case, I usually sit down with my notebook and brainstorm some ideas (even if they seem stupid!) or I skip ahead to a scene I know will be happening and write from there. That usually makes it easier to go back and fill in the blanks. Some writers also say never to go back and read what you've already written, but a lot of times, that helps me get back on track and sparks the idea I needed for that next scene.

My current work in progress is a New Adultish novel, with more of a Young Adult vibe. It's called PAPER WALLS and I'm planning to release it this fall! It's a lot different from STILL THE SONG, and I'm really excited about it. Hmm, how much should I give away...?

Don't ever give up! Keep pushing through that first draft! You are your own worst critic, so you may see your work in a much more critical light. Let your story happen, let it pan out, and then go back and polish it until it's something you feel proud of. Also, read as much as you can. It helps your words to flow more easily and brings your creativity to life. Bottom line: if you want to be a writer, you can be. Fight to overcome fear and self-doubt. You can do it. :)

The best thing is watching your own characters come alive before you, and nearly forgetting that they aren't real people with their own hopes, dreams, fears, and hurts. I love when my characters can evoke feelings in readers and they come to care for these fictional people my mind has somehow fashioned and brought to life.
