My books are about social issues, and I make no apology for taking these as my subjects. The inspiration, then, comes from observing what happens in the world and trying to develop characters who react to these problems in creative and challenging ways. Children who are abused and neglected, conflict in the Old and New West, immigration, public and private agencies that don't work--these are the arenas in which inspiration is never lacking for me.

I'm working on my seventh novel--Five Paths--which is about five friends in college who set off on their careers to try to make a difference for children who are abused around the world. They select five paths to do so, and the book follows them as their paths intersect and as they meet obstacles to their goals.
