Typically, I start with a destination in mind, but not a plan as to how I will get there. As the writing continues and the story takes shape, I create a timeline of events in the story to keep me straight. My next novel, Mingo, has quite a few characters and covers a few decades, so I will need a "family tree" and a serious spreadsheet for the timeline to keep things clear in my mind. I don't write in any sort of linear fashion - I write in scenes and I go from the beginning to the end and then back again. It is like a fabulous puzzle when I start placing the scenes together.

Ughhhhh...I have moments of just not wanting to write. It isn't that I can't think of the words, I just don't want to sit at the computer and do it. So, I read instead, until I am ready to get back to work.

The best thing about being a writer is that I get to create people, worlds, situations and I can share these worlds with the world.

Write. Dont' stop. Write about anything and everything. Ask questions and write. It doesn't need to be perfect - just "get the bones down" and then edit. Write. Edit. Write. Writers write!

(view spoiler)[My next novel is titled Mingo. Mingo may actually turn out to be 3 books - there is a lot of story to tell. It will start around 1900 and proceed to modern day. It is the story of several generations of a family of women living, growing, needing, surviving in Mingo County. As with Simple Choices, Mingo is fiction will be incorporate a lot of historical details. (hide spoiler)]

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. It seems that I am constantly writing - either at the computer (or iPad) or in my head. The things that inspire me are quite varied. I always have questions about almost everything or anything and will get inspiration for a story or character or scene from the smallest of details.

Simple Choices was inspired by real events that took place in my hometown of Matewan, WV. The book is fiction, but the setting, the storyline, and the events were inspired by Mingo County and several events that took place there.
