I live. Other than that, inspiration's a damn false idea - it's work more than inspiration that makes things happen. You have to force yourself to knuckledown and do a thing, no flashes of lightening and mysterious half-seen women walking across a room can take the place of that. If you see or hear a thing that puts a thought in your head, you have to go after it, and it's best not to wait for another one, because that may not come.

Just do it. Which seems, I don't know false - isn't everyone at every stage something of an aspiring writer? What's the difference between aspiring to do do something, doing it, and doing it again and again? At what point do you stop aspiring to do a thing and can consider yourself having done it? Kurt Vonnegut was an aspiring car salesman for a while.

Which part, I guess? I've always had this little pile of stories, and putting them together into one thing seemed like a good idea at the time. The name of the county itself, Havershed, comes from a misheard Clash lyric some fifteen years ago. I like to think it's an imaginary place like Yoknapatawpha, or Kevin Smith's New Jersey, where most things kind of happen in this own little world, but not everything.

Whiskey. Also, sometimes, whisky. Lying down on the floor helps a good deal, as does shooting aliens in the face, a good bath, and reading something by somebody way better.
