I have an almost constant storyline going on in my head, but I use my home computer to transcribe my thoughts.

I cry al lot (just kidding). I swear like a sailor (only half-kidding). I ask God for help (I'm serious). Ultimately, I ask myself what I'm trying to say, write down the answer without caring how it reads, and see if that helps me break through the block. If this doesn't help, I'll start on another part of the story. If all of the above fails, I walk away from the PC and do something else. More often than not, a breakthrough will come to me while I'm doing something as mundane as dusting or vacuuming and I'll rush back to the PC and write for hours. I'm not a very good housekeeper; I don't know if you can tell.

The very best thing about being a writer is that you can create a story and control what happens. Of course, I've written stories where the characters have taken over and gone their own way, taking the story with them, and I've been left sitting there, scratching my head, thinking, "How did this happen?" So I guess scratch what I just said. The very best thing about being a writer is that it's FUN!

Write, write, write! Whether in a journal, on a home PC, at the office computer (during lunch or break time, of course), on a smart phone or tablet, or even making notes in your head that can be transcribed later, WRITE!

I've started making notes (which is how I start my writing process) on a sequel to 'Til the Fat Redhead Sleeps. At this point, there are several paths the new story could take, so I don't have a set idea on a story line yet.

Everything around me inspires me to write. I don't know if this happens to other writers living in a large metropolitan area, but New York has this energy I can feel even when I'm standing around doing nothing. I believe many times this energy gets me going, so to speak, and I HAVE to write. It's at these times that I'm very happy I have a smart phone to write with (if I'm not at home when the urgency to write strikes).

Living and working in New York (Queens and Manhattan, respectively) for so many years has provided me with an almost daily exposure to sometimes bizarre, always interesting, and often frustrating circumstances. I may be biased, but I believe there is no better place to get ideas for books than New York City.
