To some extent, it is a luxury I can't afford as a part-time writer so I try not to give myself excuses.
In my day job I write non-fiction, and I often give advice to younger writers of 'Don't get it right, get it written'. Worrying about quality can be so inhibiting that you end up not writing anything. Ignoring that part of you which is saying 'this is rubbish' makes it much easier to write. Whatever you get down tends to be better than you'd feared and gives you something to work on.
There may be times when I can't write at my best but there are seldom times when I can't write. Once I'm in the swing of things words tend to come more easily.
I also use times when I am struggling to get into the flow of new material to go back and edit what I've written previously.

(view spoiler)[Lots of the themes came from my own experience as a scientist.
I did my PhD at an agricultural research station and saw the same challenges being faced by many scientists.
A throw-away comment from a friend set me thinking about what could happen to someone like me to make a sufficiently exciting plot, and fraud was an obvious answer.
It didn’t come to me in a single moment of inspiration though, and throughout the writing I came up with new ideas that were needed for the plot.
I decided on Sally’s relationship with Paul while I was still planning the story, and Vangelis’ character was also easy to create because I knew he would be the one to initiate the deception. I decided on extra characters, such as her housemates, whenever the story needed them. The same is true of sub plots, such as Darren’s relationship with Mel – I just saw where the characters were going.
‘The Girl at Rothamsted Research’ still doesn’t have a good ring to it though, and choosing the title was the hardest part of writing the book. The title is an image taken from Sally’s views of the farmhouse as the fire is being put out. (hide spoiler)]
