The Affair mostly resulted out of the question of how to put two characters from a tv show I watched into a setting where they would be together. Sometimes it's as basic as that. I ship these two women, I want them together, the show creators are obviously not gonna do it, so how would I? I changed the circumstances and names, of course, I tweaked their characters a little, too. In my brain they're these two women, but since I don't tell who were the inspiration, nobody else knows and I can't get sued. That's how it sometimes works (not all the time, though).

The brain is a great recycler and it uses everything you do, everything you experience and put into it as inspiration. So, I read a lot, I watch shows and films. I feed my brain with texts (and also a little life) which hopefully get turned into something different and worth while.
Most of the time, these 'new' ideas are not really good, but sometimes you find a golden nugget among all those bad ideas and turn it into a story that actually makes it onto the page.

A story I wrote for a submission last year that got to long - Halfway Home. I picked it up again, because I'm still doing research on another project and I don't want to rush into that one, because it's a big one. And Halfway Home has a really sweet beginning, and I like it.

Don't drink and write. I know that Hemingway allegedly wrote drunk and edited sober, but let's be honest, we're all not Hemingway, and you'd want to have your wits about you when you write.
Don't overplot. Don't undercharacterize. And unless your story revolves around these topics, amnesia and kidnapping are not great plot idea - so overdone.

I don't really. There are just times I'm inspired and there are times when I'm not and then I'm doing other things, like going over a text, revising, rereading, research. I don't really believe in... that thing you wrote up there. And I'm really superstitious, and don't wanna talk about it.
