Martha Mitchell Had to ponder this for a while because there are so many fandoms in my history and ships that I've loved, but I think I have to go with a ship that isn't necessarily canon (and isn't necessarily not), Elphaba Thropp and Galinda Upland in Gregory Maguire's Wicked (and the Broadway Musical based on such.) Gelphie was so important to me growing up because it redefined what romance and friendship meant to each other, and taught me that the perfect couples are the ones who balance, and see the balance in each other.
Martha Mitchell Again, usually with tea, and sometimes with a soundtrack (I find Fantasia and other movie background instrumentals good for this). I also have a knack for veering off and writing a short story or snippet about the characters I'm trying to make behave to let them vent whatever it is they are fighting over, then start fresh. It's extra helpful when I then end up with a better chapter and a snippet that I can share about that character's background. They help me learn more about that character and write them more completely in the future.
Martha Mitchell Getting to create the characters and plots that you always wanted to read as a child. For me, that means smart young girls who don't fall in love, who find themselves, who find friends, and who have good and bad things happen to them, even when they purportedly do everything correctly. There were never enough of those for me. Now, I get to make more for the next child who wants them.
Martha Mitchell Keep going no matter what. Always keep writing. Start new stories if your current ones aren't working well. Keep pushing through if you know there's something in there. Stories are hard. They take a lot of work. In the end, however, you can put it on a page, and it will be wonderfully rewarding when someone says, "I like this!"
Martha Mitchell The next book of Ampany, which picks up several years after the end of "Nottie's Potential". It's nearing the final edit stages, so hopefully will be available in early 2015.
Martha Mitchell Usually with a cup of tea and some quiet. I do a fair amount of monotonous labor for my job, which lends itself well to long periods of asking "what if...?" and letting a story spiral from there. Generally, the busier I am, the more writing I will get done.
Martha Mitchell Nottie's world began with a cat, quite like my own, who can be very smart, very dumb, and extremely ill-coordinated. Nottie herself grew very naturally as a voice I think I might have always had in my head.
